The Bweza Gorilla Group is situated in the captivating Rushaga region of Uganda’s renowned Bwindi Impenetrable Forest National Park. Which embodies a unique story of independence and exploration. With its fascinating history and intimate group size. The Bweza gorilla group has captured the hearts of visitors seeking an exceptional wildlife experience.

Bweza Gorilla Group was formed in December 2012, the Family emerged. When the remarkable silverback Bweza decided to venture out and establish his own clan. He went with a group of 9 individuals including him. The Bweza group offers an intimate and immersive experience for those fortunate enough to trek into their habitat.

Bweza now leads a family of 12 members notably 4 blackbacks, I sub-adult Gorilla; 2 silverbacks, 3 females and 2 infants. The numbers change as lots of things happen in the wild each day. Their daily routine is to move to safe territories, feed, play and sleep.

History of Bweza Gorilla Group

Bweza Gorilla Group originates from the Nshongi Gorilla group, the largest family in the Park. However, when conflicts arose among the group members in 2012, it resulted in a failed co-existence hence a split.

Silverback Bweza’s bold decision to split from the larger gorilla group demonstrates his independent spirit and zeal for adventure. Visitors who trek the Bweza family  treated to an intimate glimpse. Into the unique dynamics of a smaller gorilla group.

Bweza was the silverback that parted ways together with those who were loyal to it and started up his own family. This is a very interesting family to trek, the trekking session lasts about 2 to 6 hours depending on its location. Plus an additional 1 hour for watching the family’s day to day life.

Trekking Bweza Gorilla group starts at daybreak at Rushaga headquarters. Where the ranger guides explain the do’s and Don’ts’, the day to day activities of this group and also what you need to look out for once in their territory. Trekking this group is a bit tidy. Yet worthy since you get to watch the stunning views of Kigezi hills, Virunga volcanoes, Lake Bunyonyi, primates in the region, the unique birds and plants among others.

The group’s location in the Rushaga sector provides a scenic backdrop of lush forests and diverse wildlife. Trekkers to this group rewarded with the opportunity to witness the family’s interactions which may include; gentle grooming sessions. Playful activities and also the nurturing of young gorillas.

Just like any other gorilla group, the Bweza family plays a vital role in the conservation efforts of Bwindi Impenetrable Forest National Park. The family’s presence serves as a reminder of the delicate balance between human interaction and wildlife preservation pointing out the importance of responsible tourism and the protection of habitats.
